Modern Life is Rubbish

“To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage and kindness… The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory.” ~ Howard Zinn.

Thoughts about 'Change'

"Clearly we cannot change reality by merely wishing it to be different, therefore reality must exist outside consciousness.” The problem here is to confuse phenomena that fall outside the sphere of volition — our wishes — with phenomena that fall outside consciousness itself. Not all conscious processes fall in the field of volition."
Quote taken from this link

It simply means, we cannot change our world or change a person by wishing it alone (or what we called wishful thinking). That only works in the movies. To change something or someone, we need to make conscious what we want to change. We have to understand what it is that we want to change and recognize the qualities (or lack of it) in ourselves first. We then change ourselves to more closely reflect the change we want to see in others or the world. The reason we think we can change others and consequently, change the world, is we are listening to the voice of our ego. Our ego is the loudest voice inside of us and talks to us incessantly.

But to change the world is a different matter altogether. No single individual can change the world. The world is an image of all living beings living in it. All of which share the same consensus reality, somehow intertwined in the same fate of the age and time in which we lived. Reality is as it is because we project our thoughts, our hopes, our fears, our love (or lack thereof) into the world we see today.

Ancient wisdom tells us that to change world we must first change ourselves. But to change ourselves, we first must understand how the world really is. To take an objective observer view of what is going on around us, don't be too identified with any particular viewpoints, don't make any judgments on things that we have little understanding of, and not be afraid to call things out the way it is. And if a critical mass is reached in this understanding then the world would be changed- to a better one, hopefully.

But then again, it may be that the age we lived in 'caused' the world to be as it is today. So that there will not be a so-called mass awakening and there is no way any human being would be able to change it for the better. That doesn't mean we don;t live our lives fully and strive to make the world a better place, not only for ourselves but also for our children and all other living beings that share our world as well.
