Modern Life is Rubbish

“To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage and kindness… The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory.” ~ Howard Zinn.

Change

"If you want to understand how to get social change to happen, you need to understand the conditions that make people resist change and what makes them open to acknowledging that change might be a necessity."
---

Noticed the Auditor-General report mentioned the same huge wastage & corruption year after year after year. i have grown tired of reading and hearing about it. After a certain passage of time, nothing happens; things remain the same; the status quo is defended. What is the use of the report if it is not acted upon? It's just a show and tell with nothing much to show for effort in correcting them after telling us that things are just not right.

We still dont "understand the conditions that make people resist change". Change does not come from the outside. it doesn't come from electing a different group of people (whom we think is better but is not necessarily so) to effect a change for the better.

Change comes from the inside, from ourselves. There are many different ways to this change. The most fundamental one i could think of-do not expect another person or group of persons, or depend on others eg. the govt, for help in our lives. Of course life is not fair, and those less fortunate always deserve help initially. It doesn't mean we help them all their lives indefinitely from the cradle to the grave. i do not know how this will change things in the bigger scheme but i believe it will change our lives for the better, and perhaps this small change will effect a larger one.

Letting others, especially the govt, to "help" with our lives is tantamount to surrendering our freedom and liberty to them. It's like saying you can have control over my life and the lives of my loved ones. If we do this, we are setting up ourselves to resist change.

It's the same analogy as in "no one can change me for the better if i myself resist that change". If i let another person (an external force) changed me, then i am abrogating the responsibility of my life to that other person. How could the other person knows what is best for me as he could only think of what is best for himself when he proposed to change me for the better. And in obeying that change, i lose my freedom and liberty.

Perhaps we still have not suffered enough to acknowledge the need for a change.

Why Do People Defend Unjust, Inept, and Corrupt Systems?
